Urban exploration 31/12/2006 Prora, Island of Rugen, Germany Situated on the Island of Rugen, Prora is a 4.5 kilometer long holiday complex consisting of 10,000 identical rooms built by the Nazi's as part of a social engineering scheme designed to strengthen German families. The Island of Rugen is located in East Germany, near Poland and the Prora complex stretches the entire length of Rugen's best beach.  Never completed, Prora has stood for over 70 years despite attempts by the Russians to dynamite it after the war and the majority of it is now abandoned. The buildings are fenced off and boarded up for good reason: many of them are unstable and all of them are very dangerous.

Arrival: it's hard to miss the four km long row of buildings	Hitler chose Rugen for its calm seas and perfect beach	There were plenty of walkers around but not near the ruined sections	The complex is an example of third reich architecture	Trees have since grown around Prora, obscuring it from view	Nearly every ground and first floor window is boarded up
Buildings dynamited by the Russians are fenced off	Somehow this building is still standing	It took half a day just to circle the whole of Prora	Buildings have reinforced concrete frames	You can clearly see where the force of the dynamite distoted the structure	The fences were practically designed for climbing over
Exposed staircases: every block was virtually identical	The roof of one block now sloping down to ground level	One of the better condition blocks we explored inside	Hallway: several blocks join and the hallway goes all the way along	Downstairs, main room.  Whether the 'sunshine club' was legal or not is questionable	Probably a shower room
