Urban exploration 31/12/2006
Prora, Island of Rugen, Germany
Situated on the Island of Rugen, Prora is a 4.5 kilometer long holiday complex consisting of 10,000 identical rooms built by the Nazi's as part of a social engineering scheme designed to strengthen German families.

The Island of Rugen is located in East Germany, near Poland and the Prora complex stretches the entire length of Rugen's best beach.  Never completed, Prora has stood for over 70 years despite attempts by the Russians to dynamite it after the war and the majority of it is now abandoned.

The buildings are fenced off and boarded up for good reason: many of them are unstable and all of them are very dangerous.

Arriving to explore Prora
Arrival: it's hard to miss the four km long row of buildings
The deserted beach at Rugen, next to Prora
Hitler chose Rugen for its calm seas and perfect beach
Start of a block of deserted buildings
There were plenty of walkers around but not near the ruined sections
Empty building, Prora
The complex is an example of third reich architecture
Disused now, nature has enveloped Prora
Trees have since grown around Prora, obscuring it from view
The Prora site is massive
Nearly every ground and first floor window is boarded up
Exploring a ruined section of Prora
Buildings dynamited by the Russians are fenced off
Abandoned and decaying: Prora
Somehow this building is still standing
Urban exploration at Prora, Rugen
It took half a day just to circle the whole of Prora
Crumbling concrete of Prora
Buildings have reinforced concrete frames
Inside remains of one block at Prora
You can clearly see where the force of the dynamite distoted the structure
Fence round Prora to stop exploration
The fences were practically designed for climbing over
Semi destroyed section of Prora
Exposed staircases: every block was virtually identical
Roof collapsed at Prora
The roof of one block now sloping down to ground level
Huge, empty Prora block
One of the better condition blocks we explored inside
Inside the abandoned Nazi Prora
Hallway: several blocks join and the hallway goes all the way along
Photo from inside derelict Prora
Downstairs, main room.  Whether the 'sunshine club' was legal or not is questionable
Disused shower room, Prora, Rugen
Probably a shower room
Prora, Germany: inside
Surprisingly wide stairway, still solid

The morning after: the site has a haunting presence
